Gerrit Visser was Nederlands eerste profvoetballer
Door Micha Peters 2-3-2009Oud-international Gerrit Visser uit Nieuwendam was Nederlands eerste profvoetballer. In februari 1926 debuteerde hij voor Bethlehem Steel F.C. in het Amerikaanse profvoetbal. Ook was hij Nederlands eerste voetballer in een buitenlandse bekerfinale.

Beb Bakhuys werd lange tijd beschouwd als de eerste Nederlandse profvoetballer, daarna werd dat de Ajacied Gerrit Keizer, maar nu blijkt dat toch weer een andere Gerrit te zijn. Gerrit Visser tekende namelijk in 1926 bij de Bethlehem Steel F.C. (Verenigde Staten) een profcontract. Dat was vier jaar voordat Keizer dat deed bij het Engelse Arsenal en maar liefst 12 jaar voordat Beb Bakhuys op professionele basis voor F.C. Metz ging spelen.
Hoe het begon
In maart 2007 ontdekte Sportgeschiedenis.nl samen met schrijver en programmamaker Thomas Blom dat Ajax-doelman Gerrit Keizer korte tijd op professionele basis in Engeland had gevoetbald. Niet veel later ontving Sportgeschiedenis.nl van een lezer, van Jack Zijlstra, een e-mailtje:

De allereerste Nederlandse voetballer bij een profclub (als amateur / semi prof /full prof) was Gerrit Visser bij Bethlehem Steel Company soccer team in de Professionele AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE van het seizoen 1925 – 26.
Bijzonder interessant natuurlijk, want dit geeft nieuw inzicht in onze nationale voetbalgeschiedenis. Nader onderzoek leerde dat Visser inderdaad de eerste Nederlandse profvoetballer moet zijn geweest.
Gerrit Visser
Visser is geboren in Nieuwendam op 2 februari 1903. Hij speelde voor Stormvogels en kwam zeven keer uit voor het Nederlands Elftal. Bij drie van die duels ging het om oefenduels. De overige wedstrijden vonden plaats op de Olympische Spelen van 1924 in Parijs. Visser wist eenmaal te scoren voor het Nederlands Elftal, en wel op 27 april 1924 in een vriendschappelijke wedstrijd tegen België.

In 1925 vertrok Visser naar de Verenigde Staten. Historicus Colin Jose van de National Soccer Hall of Fame schrijft over zijn aanwezigheid in de competitie: 'A Dutch international who played seven times for his country in 1924 and 1925. Visser played three games for Bethlehem Steel late in the 1925-26 season scoring four goals in three games.'
Bethlehem Steel F.C. was actief in de American Soccer League - in de periode 1921-1933 de allereerste professionele voetbalcompetitie van betekenis in de Verenigde Staten. Uit het feit dat Visser deel uitmaakte van het eerste elftal van dit team blijkt dat hij een professionele voetballer was.

GAME HERE ON SATURDAY
Players of the Bethlehem Steel F. C., who have been on the bench during the greater part of the season, will get their opportunity to show their stuff against Newark F. C. on the Steel Field on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Steel management, a practically entire new lineup comprising reserves and new men, will take the field against the Jerseyites in the American Soccer League tilt. The game affords the opportunity for these players to display their merit and at the same time is a precaution against possible injury in nursing along the regulars in preparation for the cup games.
Visser, New Man, to Play
Most interest will probably be centered in the debut of Gerrit Visser, a Dutch Internationalist, secured by the club several weeks ago, and Frank Harris, a more recent arrival with big league experience abroad. Both these players will sport a Bethlehem uniform for the first time.
Visser joined the club with quite a reputation as a forward. He represented Holland in nine international games and also was a member of the Dutch Olympic team, which was defeated in the final for the championship. In spite of this brilliant career, Visser is quite young. He can play either an inside position or center forward.
If he makes good at center forward, the position he will be seen in against Newark on Saturday, his acquisition will be a most welcomed one. Archie Stark, Bethlehem's premier goal booter, has really been without a capable understudy and as a result has been forced to play in games whether in condition or not. Stark is deserving a good man and if Visser makes good, will more than likely get it.

NEW GOALIE SIGNED BY BETHLEHEM STEEL
James McGraw, of Detroit, May Play Here Against Newark Saturday
ONE OF THREE NEW PLAYERS
If he arrives in time to be properly registered, the Steel Workers will try out a new goalie in the American Soccer League game against Newark on the Bethlehem Steel field on Saturday afternoon. James McGraw, of Detroit, is the newcomer to the club and is expected to arrive not later than noon on Friday. If his arrival should be delayed it would be too late to register him in time for the league competition. In that event it would be either Carson or Highfield as the custodian.
Announcement of the signing of McGraw was made at the quarters of the Steel team today. Little is known of him other than that he played in Detroit where he is heralded as one of the best goalies in that section. He is originally a Scottish player and did service on Junior clubs in Glasgow. McGraw would not be eligible for the National Challenge Cup games, but will be eligible for the league contests and the league cup tilts, which will shortly get underway.
2 Other New Men
Drastic changes are contemplated for the lineup in the Newark game. If McGraw arrives in time he will be one of three new players to be given a try out. The other two already announced are Frank Harris, a halfback, who will be assigned to Bill Carnihan's position at center half and will be flanked by the veterans MacGregor and McDonald and Gerrit Visser, at center forward.
The starting time will be delayed a half hour, with the kickoff at 3 o'clock instead of 2:30. This change was made at the request of the Newark players who will not arrive until 2:20 Saturday afternoon.
Vertrek Visser
Ondanks het feit dat Visser het niet slecht deed bij de Bethlehem Steel F.C. - vier doelpunten in drie wedstrijden! - vertrok hij in 1927 naar Detroit Holley Carburetor F.C. Nogmaals historicus Colin Jose: 'He moved on to play in the Detroit Professional League for Holley Carburetors and appeared in the 1927 National Challenge Cup Final against Fall River.'
The Globe van 23 april 1927 merkte op:
If Bethlehem could affort to let Gerrit Visser, Holland internationalist, go, what a sweet club the Steelmen must have? That is the general opinion in Detroit soccer circles where Visser, playing center forasrd for the Holly Carburetor F. C., is hailed as the man of the hour and the player who put the Holly outfit on the soccer map. The first year in the National tourney, Holly outclassed such clubs as the Ben Miller's of St. Louis; Sparta of Chicago, and numerous others to advance to the peg ofthe National finalist representing the West.
This is the team that will meat the winner of the Bethlehem-Fall River setto at Providence tomorrow. Visser is a Bethlehem product, having played for one season with the Bethlehem team, and it is t he Bethlehem product that the detroit fans are lauding to the skies. And why shouldn't they? In the series of games, the Holly team amassed a total of 31 goals, for 21 of which Visser has been directly responsible.
En Visser deed het goed in Detroit. Het team haalde de finale van de National Challenge Cup. Via de National Soccer Hall of Fame leren we dat Visser zelfs tweemaal scoorde in de voorafgaande halve finale tegen Sparta:
Holley Carburetor became the first team from Detroit to reach the Final of the National, Challenge Cup, defeating Sparta A & BA 2-1 in front of 7,000 at Chicago. Gerrit Visser paced the Motor City kickers with both goals. Visser scored the first goal after twenty-five minutes in the first half. Adolph Burger equalized for Sparta a couple minutes after halftime, heading in a corner kick from Cerveny. The level scores lasted only minutes however, as Visser found the net once again to give Holley the lead again. Later in the game, Burger had a change to bring his club level once more, as Sparta was awarded a penalty kick. Burger's shot was saved by Dick, preserving the advantage. Sparta continued to press for the remainder of the game, but the Holly defense held on to preserve their spot in the final.
In de finale werd overigens met 7-0 kansloos verloren van de Fall River Marksman. Visser speelde ook deze wedstrijd en is daarmee de eerste Nederlander in een buitenlandse bekerfinale.
Visser zou tot 1931 uitkomen voor Holley Carburetor F.C. Hij overleed in december 1984 in Cashmere, Washington.
Komende week verschijnt het historisch sportmagazine Achilles 4, waarin Ferry Reurink (bekend van Het stadioncomplex) dieper ingaat op het leven van Gerrit Visser.
